Meet the Minister – Rev’d Alan Wickens

I was born in the Old Windsor maternity hospital on Crimp Hill, so you could say that I am a ‘local lad’. I grew up in the Staines and Ashford area, and after completing my schooling at Matthew Arnold Boy’s School, I followed a career in the Ambulance Service – serving firstly in London, then latterly in Surrey Ambulance Service. During my 26 years service, I qualified as a paramedic, and attained the rank of Group Manager, based at Farnborough.

During the early 1990’s, I felt a sense of call to Church ministry, and so in 1995, I decided to follow that calling. I left the Ambulance Service, and headed North to begin 4 years training for the United Reformed Church ministry at Northern College, Manchester, in which I successfully obtained a BA(Hons) in contextual theology. From there, I was ordained into my first church in Dorchester, Dorset, where I served for my first 5 years.

I received a call back to Lancashire when I was invited to serve as Minister in the Albion Fellowship for the next 13 years. In 2016, I felt a call to return to my roots, by which time the joint pastorate of Windsor and Egham had become vacant. After pursuing the call, I was invited by both churches to become their Minister and was inducted at Easter 2016.

I am married to Anthea, who is also a URC Minister serving at St. Paul’s URC in Bracknell. We have two grown-up children, James and Charlotte.

By way of interests I enjoy reading and have an eclectic taste in music ranging from modern popular music through to the classics. I also enjoy walking with our Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and also have a keen interest in railways, and in particular steam.

I hold a strong view that the Church is there for the people we serve. Therefore, it is essential that the Church engage with the people in our community, which is something, I believe, we are attempting to do at both Egham and Windsor. If you are new to the area, or are seeking a welcoming Church, why not come along and try us. I look forward to seeing you!
